Artist Statement
My artwork is a mixture of formal abstract and modern expressionism. I rarely begin with a pre-conceived image in my head since I believe "the canvas knows what it wants to be". Most of my work is based on the emotional response from an event, place, memory or even a smell rather than a specific image or representation of such.
My work relies heavily on the interaction of bright colors and layers. I enjoy adding textures that will interact and add a different spatial depth to the colors. My tools are anything from brushes, sponges, palette knives to my fingers. I add and remove paint until I reach a state in which the painting feels emotionally complete.
I have been influenced by various artists like Dali, Juan Gris, Picasso, Fernand Leger, and Paul Klee. As well, the ability to study under such artists as Peter Saul, Vincent Mariani, and Lee Chesney enriched my formation as an artist and further developed my appreciation of color.
